FIA clarifies why Red Bull avoided penalty after Verstappen towel incident

The FIA stewards have clarified why Red Bull avoided punishment after Max Verstappen was seen throwing a small cloth from his cockpit during Hungarian Grand Prix practice. In their official report, the stewards explained the incident, noting: “Shortly after Car 1 was released from its garage, the driver of Car 1 was observed to have thrown a towel out of the cockpit. The driver explained that while in the garage, the face towel had slipped from his lap to the side of the seat and the team was unaware that it remained in the cockpit.”

The stewards said the towel could have interfered with Verstappen’s control, stating: “The Stewards determine that the towel had the potential to have become lodged in the footwell and to interfere with the driver’s ability to fully control the car and that therefore the car was released in an unsafe condition.” However, they distinguished this case from more serious incidents, adding: “The stewards consider this case to be distinguishable from a case where a hard (and therefore potentially dangerous) object is left in the cockpit and to be less severe than such a case. Hence a warning to the team is imposed.”

Mekies on Red Bull and Racing Bulls: cars too different for shared development

Laurent Mekies has dismissed suggestions that Red Bull Racing could solve its current performance struggles by borrowing technical solutions from sister team Racing Bulls, stressing that the two cars are fundamentally too different for any meaningful crossover.

Mekies said: “No, I think the question is fair, but there’s a genesis of the car. Where the cars are coming from is too different for anyone to transfer anything from a car to another. It’s what Formula 1 is today. You know, it’s 10 independent teams all coming with their own ideas about where to develop the car, what difficulties they found along the way, which development paths they have ended up having due to that. And there is nothing you could take from a car to another. It’s really down to how it was developed from early on.”

Martin Brundle on Verstappen’s “indignity” finishing behind Liam Lawson in Hungary

Martin Brundle has highlighted the significance of Max Verstappen finishing behind Liam Lawson at the Hungarian Grand Prix, describing it as an "indignity".

Brundle said: "Verstappen wasn't having much of a day either, his Red Bull lacking pace as soon as his tyres overheated. He started eighth and finished ninth, along with the indignity of being behind his earlier in the season short-term team-mate Liam Lawson, who drove the sister Racing Bulls car into a fine eighth place. [These are] difficult days at Red Bull."
